There has been a lot of discussion recently about the Japanese government’s plan to establish a massive liquefaction zone in China. The reason this is such an important issue in Japan is that there are currently no suitable jobs for Japanese people to do in China. The government wants to change that by allowing people who are fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese, as well as Taiwan and Chinese mainland Chinese to find jobs in Japan. However, is this plan really going to solve the problem?

The LSR zones are simply areas where goods can be transported from China to Japan. These zones usually cover sea freight and land transport. The transport industry has suffered a lot over the past twenty years because of the global recession. There are many examples of transport jobs being outsourced to other countries, most notably to Malaysia and Vietnam. Whilst there are some exceptions, for example the Hong Kong and Singaporean labour are highly sought after, mainly because it is so cheap to hire these people compared to others in their position in China. This is mainly because it is easy to hire local workers and also because they speak the same language vietproud.

If the Japanese were to set up a manufacturing unit in China and hire local Chinese and speak Mandarin and Cantonese, then there would be a huge problem. There would be many problems with trust issues, not to mention the difficulty of finding staff. There is also a big problem in maintaining productivity due to poor morale and lack of motivation amongst the staff. When you consider all of this, it is easy to see why so many Japanese companies have been forced to look for cheaper labour in other parts of the world.

In addition, if the Japanese company was to employ people who did not speak English as their first language, then it would seem like they were not taking the outsourcing seriously. There are already many language barriers in the United Kingdom, and an employee from Japan could easily travel over to work for your company, take up any slack, and then return to Japan. With this in mind, it may be wise to only allow Japanese personnel to do jobs which require English as a first language. This means that if you need some jobs for the Japanese market, then you would not necessarily need to spend money hiring outside the UK.

One example would be a call centre in Japan. This type of centre has been hugely boosted in the last few years and many jobs now get done online. Your employees from Japan will not be able to get home to their families until they get paid, so you can save on transport costs. You can also find cheaper Japanese labour by choosing those who are willing to work online – these people can usually get more work in a day than those who live in the city or town.

Another way to get cheaper Japanese labour is to choose those who can speak English as their native language. Although this is harder to find, it may be possible. Some Chinese and Korean people are able to learn English, thanks to visits from those countries. Other countries, such as India, have a large number of workers who speak English as a first language. If you want cheaper jobs for Japanese staff, it may also be worthwhile finding someone who can speak English. This will always be useful if you are out of the country for a week or more at a time.
