Gout is an extremely painful form of arthritis caused by high levels of uric acid in the body. It typically affects only one joint at a time (usually the large toe), but it may spread to other joints. Typically there are short periods of pain, called flares, followed by long periods of remission, called remissions. Sometimes there are repeated bouts of gout, also referred to as flares, which can lead to gout arthritis, a more serious form of the arthritis disease.

In the acute stage of gout, the first signs are intense pain in the affected joint(s). These can be located anywhere on the body but tend to be concentrated in the joints of the big toes, feet and ankles. The pain will increase in severity and discomfort and last for short periods of time. At this point, if it does not get better or is not eased by over the counter or prescribed medications, you should consult with your doctor who may consider other treatment options such as:

Urate crystal deposits cause gout. Urate is a waste product produced by the kidney from uric acid. Urate crystal deposits (haematocyanins or urates) are formed when purines are broken down inside the body by enzymes. Consuming foods that have purine can cause uric acid build up and consequently cause gout. Some of the commonly consumed foods that are high in purines are seafood, meats like pork and beef, shellfish, game meat, poultry meat, cheese, cream, margarine, ice cream, vinegar, beer and yeast. In fact, it has been revealed that there is an undeniable relationship between gout and obesity. Therefore, if someone is obese, they should immediately consult their physician for the appropriate treatment to reduce the level of hyperuricemia in the body so that there will be lesser chances that the excessive production of uric acid will take place.

In addition, those who are at risk for gout should also have a change in their lifestyle to lose weight. Lifestyle changes include limiting alcohol intake and quitting smoking and losing weight. If you are not able to make these lifestyle changes, you can always take the help of some medications. Medications such as steroids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, colchicine antibiotics can also significantly help in reducing the levels of uric acid inside the body.

Last but not the least, another way of managing the symptoms of gout is by using self-management strategies. For instance, if you know that your gout affects mostly your big toe, you can take the help of high-pressure socks that contain a mild diuretic properties so that your feet would become less watery. You may also try to increase your fluid intake by drinking more water or you may take medications for uric acid. The bottom line is that, you must not ignore the symptoms of gout and you should treat it immediately to prevent the further progression of the disease. This is why it is better to avoid eating salty foods, avoid alcohol intake and start practicing more healthy lifestyle.
